February: FRAME IT!
Hello makers,
Darryl Cox Jr. is an artist who creates unique frames (or are they sculptures?) by blending picture frames with natural tree roots. I know, crazy right! I was immediately drawn to these stunning works of art and wanted to know how in the world he made them.
Turns out he grows them! He sands down one corner of the frame, adds some rooting powder and plants them like a seed. A few months later and they are ready to harvest.
Haha, just kidding. Not only is Darryl an extremely talented artist, he also has a great sense of humour and this “frame planting” is all an elaborate ruse (and probably a lucrative one for gaining likes and followers). It’s entertaining to watch though so good on him for having a bit of fun with it.
In reality, he meticulously crafts these pieces by manually combining beautiful old frames with tree roots he finds in the Oregonian forests. The results are spectacular. They tell a story of transformation and connection, of craftsmanship and artistry, of the beauty of nature and the conformity of man-made.
So so clever.

Have you found any ideas you want to try out this month? I’m still pondering my brown wooden frames. I would love to incorporate thread somehow but so far it’s still sitting in the “too hard basket”.
If you’ve seen some cool, bespoke frames I would love it if you shared them with us. Either hit reply below and leave a comment/link or jump in the chat and let’s connect.
Happy making,
Esta
